2017 EWO PD/AGM Conference

Education at Work Ontario will be hosting its Annual General Meeting and Professional Development Conference from May 9th –10th at the Fern Conference Centre located in Orillia.

The conference will benefit professionals working in the field of Work Integrated Learning (WIL). It is an opportunity to learn from industry professionals, share ideas and network with colleagues.

The conference will cover topics including:

  • Round Tables: Best Practices; Job Development; and Addressing Student Needs Through Accommodations
  • Employer Panel: Challenges and Opportunities Related to the Increasing Importance of Work Related Learning
  • Breakout Sessions on International student challenges and other similar topics

Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario

Dr. Harvey P. Weingarten is president and CEO of The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) -- an arm’s length agency of the Ontario government that conducts research and provides policy advice to govern-ment to improve the accessibility, quality and accountability of colleges and universities. HEQCO is the only or-ganization of its type in Canada. Since joining HEQCO in 2010, he has expanded the agency’s advisory role and influence with government and has orchestrated a larger public information mandate for HEQCO. Prior to HEQCO, Dr. Weingarten was president and vice-chancellor of the University of Calgary for nine years. Under his leadership, the university increased access, invested in students, recruited world-class faculty and attracted record amounts of research revenue and philanthropic support. Dr. Weingarten was provost at McMaster Uni-versity from 1996 to 2001. During a 21-year career at McMaster he served as dean of science, professor of psy-chology, department chair, and a teacher and mentor to many undergraduate and graduate students.

Christian has developed a dynamic understanding of effective job search and the varied needs of local employers. This unique experience has established him as a well-respected public speaker and media commentator on employment and labour market-related topics.


Situated on a point in Lake Couchiching, with a mile and a half of lakeshore, The Conference Centre at Fern offers facilities that are surprisingly central. Cottages nestle on the shores, and the inns offer a variety of rooms and suites. Within a short walk of your accommodation you’ll find plenty of activity and plenty of space for relaxing.

The full conference registration includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on Tuesday, and breakfast and lunch on the Wednesday. It also includes one night of accommodation on Tuesday, May 9th.
