Guidelines for the conduct of the three parties involved in Co-operative education; employers, students, and
institutions, include but are not limited to the following.
Co-op Employers
- Provide work that is related to a program of study at a Co-op
institution and similar in content to the work performed by full
time employees in their organization, adjusted to take into account the students' experience level
- Provide appropriate remuneration, working conditions, supervision,
training and evaluation to students during employment in order for
the student to perform their tasks effectively and safely
- Treat students as they would any other temporary employee regarding
benefits, and other employment entitlements in compliance with relevant
Provincial and Federal Legislation. As such, the employer assumes responsibility for the
Co-op student, as they would for any other employee, for the period of the Co-op employment.
- Provide ongoing evaluation of the students. performance; provides
feedback on the students. performance to the Co-op consultants/co-ordinators
at the work site visit
- Complete a final written evaluation - which they are encouraged to
discuss with the students - of their performance during the work term
- Discuss the topic of the students. work term reports and, if necessary
evaluates the work term report if considered confidential
- Offer feedback and suggestions to the Co-op institution on its students,
the academic programs, and Co-op process to develop and maintain relevant
programs & curricula which reflects the needs of employers
Co-op Schools
- Develop Co-operative education employment opportunities with public
and private sector employers that fulfill the Co-operative education requirements
- Maintain and enhances relationships with existing employers
- Provide career training, personal and professional development seminars
and resources to enhance students' on-going employability;
- Provide and manage administrative support for the recruitment process to
employers and students including job postings, interview scheduling, interview facilities, etc.
- Maintain contact (site visits, e-mail or telephone) with students and employers during the work term
- Provide advice and support to students and employers if difficulties arise during a work term
- Ensure that any relevant and required documentation is provided to the student, the employer and the
appropriate University department and/or Faculty
Co-op Students
- Maintain acceptable academic standing according to the regulations of their Co-op program
- Attend sessions on career development pertaining to their Co-op employment in order to have a clear
understanding of the process and to acquire job search skills
- Inform themselves, as much as possible, about the specifics of the jobs for which they are applying through a
review of the job descriptions, personal research etc.
- Conduct themselves ethically during the job search process (applications, interviews, etc.) following the
guidelines established by their respective Co-op institutions
- Observe all rules and regulations set by the employer at the workplace, neither expecting nor requesting
special privileges
- Maintain employer confidentiality
- Exercise ethical workplace conduct representing themselves, their employers, and institutions, in a manner that
enhances the reputation of each, and enhances the relationship between the institution and employers
- Accept feedback and suggestions for the improvement of their personal and professional skills in a positive
manner
- Work on developing their academic, professional and personal skills
- Resolve problems or issues that may arise in a prompt, professional manner and advise the employer and their
coordinator of concerns or problems with their work assignment or environment as soon as an issue arises
- Maintain contact (site visits, e-mail or telephone) with their co-ordinator/consultant or other appropriate
Co-op staff during the work term
- Complete and submit an appropriate work term report that has been discussed with the employer within the
deadlines established by their respective institutions
