The EWO 2008 Co-op Student of the Year Committee is pleased to announce that MaryRose Ouellette, a Business Administration - Business Operations Management co-op student at Centennial College, in Toronto, has been selected as the 2008 Co-op Student of the Year in the College category. MaryRose was nominated for her outstanding work while employed as an Analyst at Canadian Tire Corporation. There, she developed a software tool that dramatically improved the offshore supplier set-up process and she was also instrumental in educating suppliers, reducing paper usage by 95%, and improving the quality of training for additional co-op students hired. She has also excelled in her role as a Peer Advisor to students at Centennial and is an active member of associations in her industry.
We are also pleased to announce that Amanda Elizabeth Hird, a Health Studies and Gerontology co-op student at the University of Waterloo, has been selected as the winner of the 2008 Co-op Student of the Year Award in the University category. Amanda's contributions to the oncology field and quality of life research, through her work at the Odette Cancer Centre of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, in Toronto, are without question second to none for an undergraduate university co-op student. Her clinical research has been recognized nationally and internationally and she has a singular ability to connect with chronically suffering patients on a psychosocial level. The tremendous scope of Amanda's contributions are also evident through her mentoring of first year students, her volunteer work through the Hospice of Waterloo Region, and her promotion of her program to employers.
Each of these students will receive a certificate and cheque for $500 during ceremonies to be held at their respective institutions, during National Co-op Week this coming week. A ceremony is also planned for the annual Education at Work Ontario Conference, at Kempenfelt Conference Centre in Barrie on May 29th -- and we hope to see many of you there in attendance!
